Stories of the Stones

Stories of the Stones is a T+WBPT project with Newcastle City Council, funded originally by Historic England and later by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, to work with local artists and community groups to make St John’s and Westgate Hill cemeteries in the West End of Newcastle into welcoming community spaces.

Since the beginning of the project, T+WBPT and local artists have worked with interested community members to research the fascinating stories linked to both cemeteries. Alongside developing digital and archival skills, the community members have produced poetry and digital art based on these stories.

Phase 2 (April 2025-26) has seen the project expand to include finding new uses for three of the buildings at St John’s Cemetery in Elswick: the two chapels and one of the lodges.
