The Stories of the Stones Group
The Stories of the Stones Group are a group of volunteers and interested people who meet every Monday at West End Library, to explore the stories and the environment of St John’s and Westgate Hill cemeteries in Elswick. It is an open group that you are welcome to come down and join in with.
Come along to our drop-ins and start discovering your family tree, listen to, and share stories and discover more about local history.
- Learn how to preserve and share your personal family stories.
- Meet like-minded people, who are here to help you and guide you with your research.
- Write poems and make artworks to tell the stories of everyday people, who have been forgotten in history.
- Our group is also interested in restoring these amazing green spaces.
- As well as places for burial and remembrance, the cemeteries are a good place to be in nature and chill out, which can give mental and physical health benefits.
- We organise community events, exhibitions and tours both in the cemeteries and in local community venues exploring the cemeteries.

Stories of the Stones Drop In:
11am-1pm the first Monday of the month
2.45pm – 4.45pm all other Mondays
West End Library,
Condercum Road,
NE4 9JH (opposite Lidl).
We sometimes run events or go on trips, so do get in touch with us first if you are thinking of coming down to check we will be there.
